How do you prepare the skin for brow henna? In short: cleanse the brow area with a gentle foam cleanser, wipe it with a tonic to lift the last traces of make-up and oil, then let the skin dry completely before the henna goes on. That is the whole routine, and it takes only a few minutes of the appointment.
It matters because henna tints the skin beneath the hairs as well as the hairs themselves. According to Della & Delle, brow henna takes faster and lasts longer on clean, fully dry skin. Skip the prep and you usually get patchy colour and a shorter result on the skin.
This guide walks through the three Della Delle skincare products made for that job, the Facial Cleansing Mousse, the Facial Cleansing Tonic and the Facial Scrub, in the order you use them, plus a simple home-care routine for clients between appointments.
Why skin prep matters for brow henna
The brow area collects more than you might think: foundation, concealer, sunscreen, brow pomade, natural sebum and everyday pollution. Each of these sits as a thin film between the henna and the skin.
Brow henna is a powder you mix with water and apply as a paste. As a rule, it needs direct contact with the hairs and the skin to develop evenly. Any oily or creamy residue can act as a barrier, so the colour often grabs unevenly or fades early on the skin.
Della & Delle Brow Henna lasts 3 to 15 days on the skin, depending on skin type. You cannot change your client’s skin type, but you can make sure every application starts on a clean, dry surface, which is the part of the result you control.
Prep is also a hygiene and comfort step. A clean area lets you see the skin clearly, spot any irritation and decide whether to go ahead at all.
The prep routine in three steps
- Cleanse the brow area with the Facial Cleansing Mousse and rinse with lukewarm water.
- Tone with the Facial Cleansing Tonic on a cotton pad to remove the last traces of make-up and impurities.
- Dry: let the skin dry fully before you apply the henna.
The Facial Scrub is not part of this sequence. It is a separate exfoliation step, covered further down.
Step 1: cleanse with the Facial Cleansing Mousse
The Della & Delle Facial Cleansing Mousse is a gentle foam cleanser that cleans the skin deeply without drying it. It contains white lily extract, which according to the manufacturer has a calming effect, and it suits sensitive and delicate skin. The brand describes it as widely used for cleansing during lash lifting and brow design treatments.
How to use it, following the product instructions:
- Apply the mousse to the damp brow area or face.
- Massage gently with circular movements.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
In the salon, you usually only need to cleanse the brows and the skin around them. Work gently: the aim is a clean surface, not red or rubbed skin. For more on this product, see our guide to the Facial Cleansing Mousse.
Step 2: remove the last traces with the Facial Cleansing Tonic
The Della & Delle Facial Cleansing Tonic completes the cleansing step. With rice extract and D-Panthenol, it removes remaining impurities, make-up and pollution residue, and leaves the skin soft without drying it. It helps keep the skin’s natural pH, and it is alcohol and paraben free.
This is exactly what the brand recommends for the brow studio: use the tonic after the mousse to remove the last traces of make-up and impurities from the brow area, then let the skin dry before you apply the henna.
Apply it to a cotton pad and wipe gently over the brows. Avoid the eye area. You can read more in our Facial Cleansing Tonic guide.
Step 3: let the skin dry fully
This step is easy to rush, and it matters just as much as the other two. Henna takes faster and lasts longer on fully dry skin, so wait until the area no longer feels damp to the touch.
Use the moment well. While the skin dries, you can finish the consultation, confirm the shade and map the shape. By the time you have mixed the henna, the skin is usually ready.
Where the Facial Scrub fits
The Della & Delle Facial Scrub exfoliates with fine rice micro-granules. It removes dead cells from the skin surface, helps unclog pores and, because the particles are fine, works without harming the skin barrier. The brand says it suits all skin types, even sensitive skin.
Treat it as a separate exfoliation step, not as part of every henna appointment. The product instructions are: apply a small amount to dry skin, massage with gentle circular movements, rinse, and follow with a facial cleanser if needed.
A few cautious rules of thumb:
- Never use the scrub on irritated or damaged skin. The product’s own safety text says so.
- As a rule, do not scrub on the same day as the henna if the client’s skin is sensitive.
- If in doubt, leave it out. Mousse and tonic are the core of the prep.

A home-care routine between appointments
Good prep does not have to stop at the salon door. The mousse and the tonic are both designed for daily use, so they make an easy retail recommendation.
- Morning and evening: cleanse with the mousse, then wipe with the tonic, as the product instructions suggest.
- Occasionally: the scrub, on healthy, non-irritated skin.
- Before the next appointment: ask clients to come without heavy brow make-up if they can. It makes your prep quicker.
Clients who keep the area clean between visits usually arrive with skin that is easier to work on. Keep the message simple: two products, twice a day.
The same prep before lash lifting
You do not need a separate routine for lashes. The Facial Cleansing Mousse is used for cleansing before lash lifting as well as brow design, and a clean, residue-free base matters just as much for lifting lotions as it does for henna. Keep products out of the eyes, and if any gets in, rinse immediately with water.
After the prep: patch test and henna
Clean skin is only half of the preparation. Always do a patch test before brow henna, even if the client has had it before: apply the henna to the forearm for 3 hours, then watch the area for 48 hours. If redness, itching or swelling appears, do not use it. Repeat the test before every application.
Once the skin is clean and dry, you are ready to mix and apply. Our henna brows step-by-step guide covers the full treatment, and the Della & Delle brand page shows the complete range, including the brow henna in three jar sizes.

FAQ
Do I need to cleanse the brows before henna if the client wears no make-up?
Yes, as a rule. Even bare skin carries natural oil, sunscreen or skincare. Henna takes faster and lasts longer on clean, fully dry skin, so cleanse and tone every time.
Can I apply henna while the skin is still slightly damp?
It is better not to. Della & Delle recommends fully dry skin. Give it a moment while you finish mapping or mixing the henna.
Should I exfoliate before every henna treatment?
No. The Facial Scrub is a separate, optional step. Never use it on irritated or damaged skin, and as a rule avoid scrubbing on the day of the henna if the skin is sensitive.
Can clients use the mousse and tonic at home?
Yes. Both are made for daily use, morning and evening, according to the product instructions. Avoid the eye area with the tonic.
