Mestay Berry Rod (C curl, pink) and Mango Rod (LC curl, yellow) in basic and big sizes with their boxes

Mestay Berry vs Mango Rod: C Curl or LC Curl?

Every lash artist knows the moment: the client is lying back, the lashes are cleansed, and you are holding two rods over the eye trying to decide which one will give the result she actually pictured. With Mestay, that choice usually comes down to two shapes, the Berry Rod with its rounded C curl and the Mango Rod with its bolder LC curl. This guide is about exactly that decision: C curl vs LC curl lash lift, what each shape does to the lash, which clients each one suits, and when it makes sense to step up to the oversized Big Berry and Big Mango.

If you want the overview of the whole range first, read our companion article on Mestay lash lift rods. For the basics of rod shapes and sizing in general, our lash lift rods guide is the best starting point.

What all four rods have in common

Before comparing curls, it helps to know what does not change between them. The Berry, Big Berry, Mango and Big Mango rods are all made from soft silicone that wraps around the eye shape and adheres to the skin without glue. They are tint-resistant, so lash tint does not stain them, and they are reusable and easy to clean. All four are compatible with both Traditional and Korean lash lift techniques, and all are latex-free and cruelty-free.

The C curl: Mestay Berry Rod

What result does the C curl give?

The Berry Rod creates a soft, round, natural-looking C curl. The curve is even from root to tip, so the lash follows a smooth arc rather than a sharp bend. The finished look is lifted and fuller, but still clearly “her own lashes, just better”. This is the curl for everyday beauty: clients who want to wake up looking fresh, who wear little make-up, or who work in environments where a dramatic look feels out of place.

Which lashes and eyes does it suit?

The Berry box contains four pairs in four sizes, one pair each of No. 1 (XS) for very short lashes, No. 2 (S) for short to medium lashes, No. 3 (M) for medium to long lashes and No. 4 (L) for long or thick lashes. That spread makes the Berry Rod the most versatile starting point in the range, and it is designed for artists who work with a wide variety of eye shapes and lash lengths.

The C curl is also the safer choice for clients with very heavy hooding or shorter lashes. Mestay itself points out that for these clients a softer curl like the C curl may give a more natural and comfortable result than the LC curl. A gentle, rounded lift keeps short lashes from looking bent and avoids pushing the tips hard against a heavy lid.

When to step up to the Big Berry

The Big Berry Rod keeps the same rounded C curl but with a larger diameter. A bigger rod means a gentler curve over a longer distance, so long lashes are lifted without being wrapped too tightly. The box holds three pairs: No. 1 for medium to long lashes needing a natural lift, No. 2 for longer lashes with a soft curl and No. 3 for very long lashes or an extra soft lift effect.

The LC curl: Mestay Mango Rod

What result does the LC curl give?

The Mango Rod is built for drama. Its LC curl combines a rounded root with a lifted, sharp curl at the tips. In practice, the base of the lash is lifted gently, and then the outer part kicks upwards more decisively. The result is bold and defined: lashes look longer, the curl is clearly visible from the side and the eye appears more open. This is the rod for the client who says “I want people to notice”.

Which lashes and eyes does it suit?

The Mango box contains five pairs, one of each size: S for short lashes or smaller eyes, M for medium-length lashes, L for longer lashes, XL for extra-long lashes needing a strong curl and 2XL for very long lashes or bold, dramatic lifts. With five sizes, you can match the rod closely to the lash length, which matters more with a sharp tip curl than with a soft C.

The LC curl is excellent for hooded eyes. The bold lift at the tips helps open the eye area, making eyes look larger and more awake, because the lash tips rise clearly above the fold of the lid. The exception, as mentioned above, is very heavy hooding combined with short lashes: there the Berry is often kinder.

When to step up to the Big Mango

The Big Mango Rod is the larger version of the Mango, designed for clients with longer or thicker lashes. It keeps the bold LC shape, rounded at the root and sharp at the tips, but adds a bigger diameter for extra volume and lift. Sizes are No. 1 for medium to long lashes needing a strong lift, No. 2 for longer lashes or thicker lash sets and No. 3 for very long or very thick lashes requiring maximum volume.

Consultation questions that decide the rod for you

The right rod is chosen in the consultation, not on the bed. A few minutes of questions save you from a result the client does not love for the next weeks. These are the questions that usually point clearly to C or LC:

  • How do you want your lashes to look with no mascara? “Natural”, “neat” or “just a bit lifted” point to the Berry. “Wow”, “curled like mascara” or “open eyes” point to the Mango.
  • Do you wear mascara most days? Clients who rarely wear make-up are often happiest with a C curl. Clients who always wear mascara and like volume usually enjoy the LC tip.
  • Have you had a lash lift before, and what did you think? If a previous lift felt “too much”, go C. If it “dropped too quickly” or “didn’t show”, the LC shape may be what she was missing.
  • Does your lid feel heavy in the evening or when you are tired? This helps you judge the degree of hooding and whether the LC lift will help or whether a gentle C will be more comfortable.

Then look at the lashes themselves. Measure their length against the rod, check how dense and coarse they are, and note any differences between the inner and outer corner. Length and thickness decide the size and whether you need the regular or the oversized rod; the client’s wishes and the eye shape decide C or LC.

Typical mistakes and how to avoid them

Over-curling

The most common complaint after a lift is lashes that look curled back on themselves. This usually happens when the rod is too small for the lash length, so the tips wrap over the top and keep travelling. It is more noticeable with the LC curl because the tip is already designed to lift sharply. The fix is to size up: move to a larger Mango size, or to the Big Mango for long lashes. If the client wanted natural, the Big Berry is often the answer.

Crimping

Crimping, a visible angle or kink in the lash, happens when lashes are not laid flat and smooth on the rod, or when the shape does not match the lash length. Take time to separate and comb every lash onto the silicone, with no crossing and no gaps at the root. Because the Mestay rods adhere without glue, you can reposition them until the base sits right along the lash line before you start.

Ignoring lash thickness

Length is not the only factor. Thick, dense lashes behave like longer lashes on the rod. If they bunch on the regular rod, step up to the oversized version even if the length alone would not require it.

Our practical recommendation

If you are building your kit, owning both shapes is the most flexible setup. The Berry covers the majority of natural requests across four sizes, and the Mango adds the bold option across five sizes. Add the Big Berry and Big Mango as your clientele grows to include long and thick lashes, so you never have to squeeze long lashes onto a rod that is too small. FAQ

What is the difference between a C curl and an LC curl lash lift?

A C curl, as with the Berry Rod, follows an even, rounded curve from root to tip for a soft, natural lift. An LC curl, as with the Mango Rod, combines a rounded root with a sharper, lifted curl at the tips for a bolder, more defined result.

Which rod is better for hooded eyes?

The LC curl of the Mango Rod is excellent for hooded eyes because the lifted tips help open the eye. For very heavy hooding combined with shorter lashes, the softer C curl of the Berry Rod often gives a more natural and comfortable result.

When should I use the Big Berry or Big Mango instead of the regular rod?

Use the oversized rods for longer or thicker lashes. The larger diameter gives a gentler curve over a longer distance, which helps prevent over-curling. Choose Big Berry for a soft, natural look and Big Mango for a strong, dramatic lift.

Do I need glue with Mestay rods?

No. All four rods are made of soft silicone that adheres naturally to the skin, so they stay in place without glue and can be repositioned while you set up.
